Electromagnetic Shower Profile Measurements in Iron with 500 MeV Electrons
نویسنده
چکیده
The longitudinal and lateral shower profiles for 500 MeV electrons in iron are studied using dosimetry and activation techniques. The results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations and other previously published data. The agreement between the data and the EGS4 simulation results is good; a simple shower profile parametrization of type kz exp (−βz) does not represent the experimental data well at and around the shower maximum. The differences observed in the activation and dose profiles clearly show the role of photons in electromagnetic showers. The photon fraction increases as the shower develops deeper and they carry a larger energy fraction farther into the absorber. Photodisintegration reactions are responsible for the activation of iron and we identified Mn, Fe and Mn as more active isotopes among several others. These studies were performed for estimating the dose and its profile for the CMS quartz fiber calorimeter radiation damage work performed at LIL (CERN).

متن کاملThe structure of ionization showers in air generated by electrons with 1 MeV energy or less
Ionization showers are created in the Earth’s atmosphere by cosmic particles or by run-away electrons from pulsed discharges or by the decay of radioactive elements like radon and krypton. These showers provide pre-ionization that can play a role for discharge inception or evolution; radioactive admixtures in plasma technology use the same effect. While the CORSIKA program provides cross sectio...
متن کاملFast shower simulation in the ATLAS calorimeter
The time to simulate pp collisions in the ATLAS detector is largely dominated by the showering of electromagnetic particles in the heavy parts of the detector, especially the electromagnetic barrel and endcap calorimeters. Two procedures have been developed to accelerate the processing time of electromagnetic particles in these regions: (1) a fast shower parameterisation and (2) a frozen shower...

In the fluorescence detection of ultra high energy (& 10 eV) cosmic rays, the number of emitted fluorescence photons is assumed to be proportional to the energy deposited in air by shower particles. We have performed measurements of the fluorescence yield in atmospheric gases excited by electrons over energies ranging from keV to hundreds of MeV in several accelerators. We found that within the...
متن کاملReconstruction of Longitudinal Profiles of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Showers fromFluorescence andCherenkov LightMeasurements
We present a new method for the reconstruction of the longitudinal profile of extensive air showers induced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. In contrast to the typically considered shower size profile, this method employs directly the ionization energy deposit of the shower particles in the atmosphere. Due to universality of the energy spectra of electrons and positrons, both fluorescence and ...
